Our next move was to Greybull, Wyoming where Woody found a job in a gas station working for Lloyd Groseclose. He pumped gas but also worked on the docks loading and unloading freight. We lived in a train refrigerator car that was partitioned into two rooms, a kitchen in one half and a bedroom in the other half. It was located on the land that Lloyd Groseclose owned.
When it turned winter we moved into a basement apartment in Greybull which had two bedrooms, front room and kitchen and even a bathroom. From here we moved to Billings, Montana where he worked on the dock and drove truck for Birlington Truck Lines. He had a night run from Billings to Greybull, Basin, Worland and Casper, Wyoming. He left about the time we finished supper and returned about the time we were getting up in the morning.
It was here that our 3rd child was born on January 26, 1951, a little girl 6 lbs., 15 1/2 oz. that we named Diana Jean. Woody was on his night run so I made a quick trip to the hospital in a Taxi across town in a blizzard We arrived there at 11:00pm and she was born at 11:17. She came so fast I was in shock after, but we both survived. We went to church only once while there and that was to have her blessed. (She cried during the blessing) We lived in a mother-in-law house at the back yard of another house. We rented it from the people who owned it and we lived there till Diana was three months old. We got word from D.R. and Charles that they were again hiring at Kaiser Aluminum so he built a trailer to put our belongings in and we moved back to Spokane and went to work for Kaiser Aluminum. He worked there for the next 18 years. He was laid off twice but worked one of those times as an electrician for Claire & Rex Conrad and another time for George Wagstaff Metal Works. However he was always called back and worked in several areas (e.g. box shop building crates to ship metal, can line rolling metal for cans and later assistant foreman & shop steward.) He worked here till he retired in 1969. At first we rented a home on Park road in Dishman. It was a nice house but too far from his brothers to suit Woody so we rented a house on Montgomery road in Greenacres, from Virgil Quinton, just down the road and around the corner from D.R. & Alice who lived on Long Road. Charles & Thea also lived on Long Road but farther down. Our fourth child and second girl was born in the Sacred heart Hospital on May 18,1953 at 3:20pm. We named her Cheryl Kay. She weighed 7 lbs, 4 oz. and was 20 inches long. Dr. Ely was our doctor. She tried to come earlier in the morning but I was in the middle of my washing so with each contraction I would hold on to the clothes line or the washer until it passed, praying things would slow down till I could get my washing finished. My prayers were answered and I even had an hour or so after I got to the hospital. Cheryl was a tiny little girl, but seemed to be healthy and happy. Our fifth child and 3rd boy was also born while we were living in Greenacres and he was born in the same hospital. He arrived on April 17, 1955 and we named him Merlin David. The middle name was after D.R. because he came on D.R.'s birthday. He weighed 7 lbs., 13 1/2 oz. and was 20 1/2 inches long and came at 9:19pm. Dr. Ely attended. He grew quite rapidly into a chubby little guy, quite healthy and happy. We fed him on cow's milk that we got from Monte & Tillie Leavitt, our neighbors and friends who lived on Barker road. When Merlin was only a few months old we had a fire in the basement caused by a faulty furnace. We were blessed that we detected it early and got everybody out. Also we got help to get the fire out and most of the damage was smoke damage. We moved out this time to a house on 4th Avenue in Veradale which we bought from Mr. & Mrs. Wiltse. It was a smaller house and we lived here almost 2 years. Another baby boy was born to us on November 17, 1956 at 9:19pm. He weighed 8lbs., 8 oz. and was 20 1/2 inches long, and we named him Calvin Charles, middle name after Woody's brother Charles whose birthday was one day earlier. He was also born at the Sacred Heart Hospital and the Dr. was Dr. Ely. It was at this time that we had an emergency 2 days before Calvin was 3 months old, also Randy's 8th birthday dinner. I took very sick suddenly and asked Woody to take over while I went to lie down. when he came in after dinner was over I thought I was feeling better but had to go to the bathroom. I got up to do so and fainted. The next thing I knew I was on my way to the hospital in an ambulance. I don't remember much of what took place, except they told me after I had a blood clot in the ovarian tube (they called it a tubal pregnancy). An emergency operation followed as I was bleeding internally and it was a rather close call. They gave me blood transfusions etc., and told Woody in another half hour it would have been too late. So D.R. & Alice took our baby Calvin and had him for 2 or 3 months till I got help and could take him back. In the mean time several people took turns coming to help, first my mother, then Woody's mother, then we hired a live in lady till I was able to cope. In the interim we bought a new home large enough for our family and the people who were helping us. It was the second house from the corner of Adams on 5th Ave in Opportunity. We lived there for several years, long enough to build a garage, and fix a bedroom in the basement for Eldon & Randy. It took me a year or so to get my strength back and there was some speculation if I could have more children. But while they were speculating I got pregnant and our seventh child was born January 1, 1959 at 1:36am. He was the first New Year's baby in Spokane that year. We named him Gordon Howard, middle name after my father who died the fall before from Leukemia. He weighed 7 lbs 4 oz and was 20 inches long. He was born in the Sacred Heart Hospital with Dr. Ely officiating. We didn't get gifts from businesses as they do in some areas but they came and took pictures of us and we were on the evening news and in the papers. He was a healthy happy baby as the others.
to be continued...
I need to stop there even though it's in the middle of the paragraph, it's a really long one!! I am amazed at all Grandma did. They lived in a train car, also taking a taxi to the hospital by herself to have a baby, I wonder who took care of the kids or did she take them with her??? I have a hard time thinking about having a baby without my hubby being there. But I guess they didn't let them in the delivery room back then, so going to the hospital alone must not have been such a crazy thing, since they would just wait in another room anyway. I also thought it was awesome that she would pray for the contractions to slow down so she could finish her laundry!! Which means she was praying for a longer labor??? Wow, Grandma you are one awesome lady!!!
I hope you are enjoying these not so little excerpts from Grandma's history. I hope more people are reading them than just Jenny, although even if you are, Jenny, it would still be worth it!! :)
